The problem is usually the record, not the equipment

Industrial protection systems are generally installed correctly and then diverge from their documentation over the following decades. Devices get replaced, settings get adjusted during a troubleshooting call, loads get added, a transformer gets swapped — and each change is real while the drawing set stays where it was.

None of that is visible until something forces a comparison: a utility question about protection at the service point, an authority having jurisdiction reviewing a modification, an insurer requiring current studies, or an event where a fault took out more of the plant than it should have. At that moment the gap between the record and the facility becomes the whole problem.

Establishing what is actually installed

The first phase of most industrial engagements is reconciliation: comparing the drawing set, the settings record, and the equipment in the field, and resolving the differences. It is unglamorous and it is where most of the value sits, because nothing downstream — coordination, settings, submittals — is trustworthy if the model underneath it is wrong.

Adding generation behind the meter

Industrial facilities adding solar, storage, or standby generation intended to run in parallel with the utility inherit a new set of requirements. Fault current changes in magnitude and direction, protection that was designed for a radial system may no longer coordinate, and the facility enters the utility's interconnection process with its own protection, settings, and documentation obligations. Retrofits and protective device upgrades

Replacing electromechanical relays with microprocessor devices, or replacing switchgear, changes what protection is available — usually for the better, and always in ways that require re-coordination. We support the planning: what the new devices make possible, what must be re-studied, what the settings should be, and what documentation the change produces.

What does 'protection compliance' mean for an industrial facility?

It means being able to demonstrate, on paper, that the protection at your utility service and inside your facility is what it is supposed to be. The demand usually arrives from one of three places: the serving utility asking about protection at the service point, an authority having jurisdiction reviewing a modification, or your own insurer or corporate standard requiring current studies and documentation.

In each case the underlying request is the same — show us the current one-line, the protective device settings, and the study that justifies them.

Our documentation is decades out of date. Is that a problem?

It is extremely common, and it is the normal starting condition rather than an obstacle. Facilities change continuously and the drawings rarely keep up. The first phase of most industrial engagements is establishing what is actually installed — reconciling the drawing set, the settings record, and the equipment in the field — before anything is coordinated or submitted.

We are adding generation behind our meter. What changes?

A great deal. Adding a generation source to a system whose protection was designed as radial changes both the magnitude and the direction of fault current, which can cause existing non-directional devices to misoperate or to stop seeing faults they used to clear. It also brings your facility inside the utility's interconnection process, with its own protection, settings, and documentation requirements. See DG interconnection engineering.
